Heavy Industry Logistics (HiLOG) has once again demonstrated its capability in managing complex, large-scale logistics projects with the successful relocation of the Kipevu II 74MW diesel power plant from Mombasa, Kenya, to Senegal and Mali in West Africa.
The Challenge
This ambitious operation, beginning in July 2024, involved the dismantling, transportation, and installation of the Kipevu II power plant. Our partners at Advantis Projects and Engineering led the disassembly and installation, while HiLOG was entrusted with overseeing the entire logistics process, including transporting the cargo safely and efficiently to two destinations: Sindia in Senegal and Fougadougou in Mali.
The scope of the move included:
- Over 90 x 40’ containers
- 4,512 freight tons of breakbulk cargo
- 7 diesel engines, each weighing 120MT
- 6,094 nautical mile journey
The scale and complexity of this cross-continental move posed several challenges, particularly around the timing, logistics coordination, and ensuring all components reached their respective sites without delay.
The Execution
HiLOG’s team worked tirelessly to plan and execute the logistics of this intricate project, managing multiple shipments of both containerised and breakbulk cargo. The transport of the heavy diesel engines required detailed route planning and the use of specialised equipment to ensure their safe arrival. After beginning the project in July it was only in mid-December that all the breakbulk was successfully loaded onto the MV Janis to set sail on her nautical journey to Dakar.
Coordinating with various stakeholders across borders, including customs authorities and transport partners, was essential to maintaining the strict timelines set for the operation. Our team also had to navigate the logistics of transporting heavy and oversized equipment across diverse terrains and ensuring all aspects of the shipment were handled with precision.
The Outcome
Thanks to HiLOG’s extensive experience and efficient planning, all shipments arrived on schedule at their final destinations. The relocation of the Kipevu II power plant marks another successful large-scale logistics operation that demonstrates HiLOG’s commitment to delivering exceptional service, regardless of the complexities involved.
