Inter-Africa Air Freight Expansion

Jan 27, 2023 | News

With the growth of e-commerce and international trade, demand for air cargo services has increased in Africa. HiLOG like many logistics companies and airlines has expanded its air cargo capacity to meet this demand and provide an integrated end-to-end air freight solution for our customers.

Recent Changes to the Africa Air Freight Industry

The last few years have been tough and COVID-19 taught many airlines a big lesson, that air freight can provide a source of revenue when they are unable to operate as usual due to travel restrictions. In tandem, these restrictions also drove up the cost of ocean freight to unprecedented levels, that are only beginning to come down now. The East African recently reported: “African airlines saw international cargo volumes increase by 26.7 percent end of last year, which is the largest increase of all regions. International capacity was 9.4 percent higher than pre-COVID levels, Africa is the only region in positive territory, albeit on small volumes.”

Unique to Africa has been the pursuit of a fully integrated African air transport market, initiated over 20 years ago in an effort to liberalise air transport services and encourage fair competition between airlines. As of last year 34 countries, equivalent to 80% of the African aviation market are signatories to the agreement which according to a study by the Africa Union, will lead to ‘improved market access, greater connectivity, increased competition, reductions in passenger air fares and higher traffic demand levels.

Air Freight Providers Focusing on Efficiency and Cost Cutting

New players entering the market and existing companies consolidating to gain market share have led to a focus on efficiency and cost-cutting measures to stay competitive.  With improved air connectivity across Africa, air freight can only continue to grow as more cities and routes become available. All of this is great news for HiLOG’s customers as the air freight market in Africa expands and becomes increasingly competitive.
